Hernán Fontanet is a Professor of Spanish and Latin American Literature at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ, where he has held academic positions since 2007. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Spanish (with a concentration in Latin American Literature) from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, and advanced degrees from prestigious institutions in Madrid and Buenos Aires. His research focuses on Spanish and Latin American literature, with a particular emphasis on poets such as Juan Gelman, Francisco Urondo, Leónidas Lamborghini, and Humberto Costantini. His work interrogates themes of exile, political resistance, identity, and historical memory, often through the lens of Argentina’s turbulent 20th-century history.
Fontanet has authored numerous books, including Gelman: Un poeta y su vida (2015) and Deconstructing Heteronormative Subtexts in South American Children’s Literature (2025). He has presented at international conferences in South Korea, Mexico, Chile, and the U.S., and his scholarly articles address topics like queer resistance during Argentina’s Dirty War and the Ashkenazi literary diaspora under the military junta. He has been recognized with the Golden Pakal Award (2015) and grants from organizations including NeMLA and AATSP.
At Rider University, he teaches courses on Latin American literature, film, and cultural studies, and has led study abroad programs in Peru, China, and Morocco. He is actively involved in academic service, including coordinating the Latin American and Caribbean Studies minor and advising campus cultural clubs. Fontanet’s interdisciplinary approach bridges literary analysis with historical and political contexts, reflecting his commitment to understanding literature as a mirror of societal struggles and identities.
