His research is focused on advancing stroke care through clinical trials and neuroimaging, particularly in extending treatment windows via penumbral imaging. He pioneered the EXTEND-IV trial, which redefined international stroke treatment guidelines. His work spans thrombolysis, stem cell therapy, biomarker evaluation, and multicenter trial coordination. He is a primary investigator on multiple active NHMRC and industry-sponsored phase 2 trials involving novel agents like redasemtide, ARG-007, and BB-031.
His recent publications (2023–2024) reflect a strong trend in high-impact clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses in major journals such as The Lancet Neurology, JAMA Network Open, and European Stroke Journal. These works focus on antiplatelet strategies, stroke recurrence, telemedicine during pandemics, and novel therapeutics, highlighting his leadership in evidence-based stroke medicine.
Prof Ma is a key advocate for amnion stem cell therapy in stroke and multiple sclerosis and leads the I-ACT trial. He also co-founded the Australasian Stroke Academy (ASA) to train future stroke specialists. His editorial roles further amplify his influence in the field.
