Dr. Henry L. Munson, Jr. is a Professor of Anthropology and Cooperating Professor at the School of Policy & International Affairs (SPIA) at the University of Maine. He holds a Ph.D. in Social/Cultural Anthropology from the University of Chicago (1980), an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Chicago (1973), a B.A. in Linguistics from Columbia University (1970), and a Certificate in Literary Arabic from the American University in Cairo (1976). His research focuses on religion and violence, Islamic fundamentalism, and the intersection of religion with politics, nationalism, and power dynamics in the Middle East, particularly Morocco. He has authored influential books such as Religion and Power in Morocco and Islam and Revolution in the Middle East.
Munson’s work explores themes like the comparative study of late 20th-century revivalist movements, Christian anti-Judaism, and secular antisemitism. His articles and books critically analyze religious movements, political conflicts, and historical contexts.
