Sarah Walton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice at the University of Maine. Her research focuses on mass incarceration, spatial inequality, and the impact of incarceration on communities, particularly examining rural-urban disparities and county-level economic/political dynamics. She holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Rural Sociology from The Ohio State University.
Walton’s work analyzes how local governments and institutions respond to social issues like incarceration, emphasizing the role of government capacity and policy. She explores connections between jail incarceration rates, rurality, and economic conditions. Her research bridges criminology, sociology, and public policy.
