Henning Lobin is a Professor of German Linguistics at the University of Mannheim and the Director of the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS). He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Bonn and a Habilitation from Bielefeld University. His academic leadership roles include Director of the IDS since 2018, former Professor at Justus Liebig University Gießen, and former Vice President of that institution. He specializes in German grammar, corpus linguistics, political linguistics, and digitization of cultural techniques.
Education: Abitur (1983), Studies in Germanistics, Philosophy, and Computer Science at Saarbrücken and Bonn Universities, Ph.D. (1991), and Habilitation (1996).
Research interests focus on language policy, digital transformation of language studies, and analysis of political discourse. Recent work includes projects on Hitler's speeches (1933-1945), language radicalization in politics, and the role of orthography in education.
Awards include the Hugo Moser Prize and IDS Fellow recognition. Active in media engagements, he frequently discusses language issues in interviews and columns for Deutschlandfunk, SWR, and ZDF.
Leads the IDS’s strategic initiatives, including the Forum Deutsche Sprache building project, and chairs key committees within the Leibniz Association and German academic organizations.
