Prof. Dr. Gerhard Stickel was a prominent linguist and director of the Institut für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) in Mannheim from 1976 to 2002. He held academic positions at the University of Mannheim as Honorarprofessor since 1986. His career included roles such as DAAD lecturer in Japan, leader of contrastive linguistics projects, and involvement in lexicographical initiatives like the revision of the Fremdwörterbuch. His research focused on German linguistics, political vocabulary, and computational linguistics.
- Education: Studied Germanistics, English, and General Linguistics at Universities of Freiburg, Bonn, and Wesleyan (USA), earning a doctorate in General Linguistics in 1969/70.
Stickel's research interests centered on German language structure, lexicography, and applied linguistics. He contributed to major projects like the German-Japanese contrastive grammar and political discourse analysis. His awards include the Bundesverdienstkreuz and Ordre des Arts et Lettres, alongside leadership roles in national and international linguistic organizations.
Post-retirement, he remained active in language policy as a member of the Deutschen Sprachrats and EFNIL President. His legacy includes foundational work in German language documentation and lexicography.
