Helios Herrera is a Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick, UK, and Director of the CEPR Political Economy Research Programme. He holds a Visiting Professorship at the London School of Economics (LSE). His research focuses on political economy, with emphasis on economic populism, identity politics, and fake news. Herrera earned his PhD in Economics from New York University (NYU) and a B.A. in Physics from the Universitá di Pavia, Italy.
Prior to his current position, he held roles at institutions like ITAM (Mexico City), SIPA Columbia University, HEC Montreal, and PUC-Rio. His professional responsibilities include coordinating the Political Economy & Public Economics (PEPE) research group at Warwick.
His research explores how economic conditions influence political behavior, including studies on the financial drivers of populism in Europe, cultural clashes within EU institutions, and the impact of distrust on democratic processes. Recent work examines the relationship between economic insecurity and populist demand, as well as the dynamics of political brinkmanship in legislative negotiations.
Herrera’s academic contributions span theoretical and applied political economy, with publications in top journals like the Journal of Political Economy and the Quarterly Journal of Political Science. His work often bridges economic theory with empirical analysis, addressing contemporary issues such as fake reviews in markets and electoral systems’ design.
