Heli Valtna is a researcher at the University of Tartu, currently holding the position of Junior Research Fellow in Deep Tech Ecosystems at the School of Economics and Business Administration (1.00 FTE since 2024). Previously, she served as an Associate Professor in Physical Optics (0.10 FTE, 2021–2024) and Senior Research Fellow in the Institute of Physics. She also worked as Head of the Autonomy Development department at Milrem AS (0.70 FTE, 2018–2019).
Her research focuses on deep tech ecosystems, science policy, optics, and technical physics, with notable contributions to ultrashort pulse characterization and nonlinear optics.
- Education: PhD in Physics (summa cum laude, 2010), MSc and BSc in Physics (University of Tartu).
- Teaching: Taught Optics (6 ECTS), Photonics projects, and Practical Physics courses at the University of Tartu.
Awards and Recognition: Nationally awarded science communicator (2018), author of the award-winning textbook Füübits (2017), Young Scientist Award (2017), and finalist of the European Descartes Science Communication Prize (2007). Member of the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences and the Government's Research and Development Council (2023–2024).
Industrial and R&D Contributions: Developed patented imaging systems and photonics technologies. Coordinated the Science Bus project (Estonian Science Communication Award, 2006) and appeared in national TV science shows Rakett 69 and ETV's Füüsikaminutid.
