Helge W. Arz

Professor Dr. Helge W. Arz is a faculty member at the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) in Rostock, Germany. His research specializes in paleoclimate dynamics, with a focus on ocean-atmosphere interactions during the Quaternary period.

His work investigates orbital and millennial-scale climate variability using marine and terrestrial sediment archives from regions including the South Pacific, Southern Andes, and Black Sea. Key interests include reconstructing westerly wind systems, carbon storage processes in coastal margins, and solar influences on glacial climates.

Professor Arz leads multiple DFG-funded projects such as studies of Pacific Southern Ocean dynamics since the Mid-Pleistocene and paleoenvironmental reconstructions from Chilean fjords. He also contributed to IODP Expedition 383 examining subantarctic oceanography.
