Shaun Marcott is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on late Quaternary climate change, glacial geology, and paleoclimatology, utilizing geochemical, statistical, and mathematical techniques. He works with diverse paleoclimate archives including glacial deposits, marine sediments, and ice cores to understand interactions between climate and glacial systems.
Research interests emphasize glacial landscape evolution, climate-glacier interactions, and reconstructing past environmental conditions to contextualize modern climate change. Methodological expertise includes cosmogenic nuclide dating, statistical modeling of large datasets, and analyzing paleoenvironmental proxies. Current projects explore Holocene glacier dynamics, Pleistocene ice-sheet behavior, and millennial-scale carbon cycle variability.
Marcott teaches courses in oceanography, glaciology, and paleoceanography. His lab (Proglacial Lab) addresses interdisciplinary questions at the interface of geology, climatology, and computational science. Recent work includes groundbreaking studies on global temperature reconstructions and millennial-scale CO2 variability during the last glacial period. Advising current graduate students Jeremy Brooks, Andrew Jones, Yasmeen Orellana Salazar, and Matias Romero.
Publications span high-impact journals, addressing topics like Younger Dryas climate dynamics, Southern Ocean influences on CO2 levels, and glacial chronology in Patagonia and the Andes. His research integrates fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and computational modeling to advance understanding of Earth's climate system evolution.
