Helga Nowotny

Helga Nowotny is a distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Social Studies of Science, with a career spanning institutions including ETH Zurich (1996-2002) and the University of Vienna (1987-1996). She held leadership roles such as Director of the Collegium Helveticum and Founding Director of the Branco Weiss Fellowship program. Currently, she serves as Vice-President of the Council (since 2005) and Chair of the ERA Council Forum Austria.

• Education: Ph.D. in Sociology (Columbia University, 1969), Habilitation at University of Vienna (1982) and University of Bielefeld (1980), Doctor juris (University of Vienna, 1959).

Her research focuses on the social organization of science, science-technology-society interactions, epistemology, and sustainability. She has contributed to policy frameworks like the EU's 5th Framework Programme and served on advisory boards for institutions including the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung.

Scientific awards include the John Desmond Bernal Prize, multiple Doctor Honoris Causa degrees, and recognition with the Österreichisches Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst I. Klasse. She is a Fellow of AAAS and member of Academia Europaea.
