Helene Whittaker is a Professor of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Gothenburg since 2013. Previously, she held academic positions at the University of Tromsø (Full Professor in Classics, 2004-2012; Senior Lecturer in Classics, 1994-2004) and served as Peter M. Warren Visiting Professor in Aegean Prehistory at the University of Bristol (2009).

Her research focuses on the Aegean Bronze Age (especially Mycenaean Religion), Greek and Roman languages/culture, Homer, Roman history, Roman Greece, Neoplatonism, Early Christianity, and transitions from Bronze to Iron Age.

Whittaker has extensive excavation experience at sites in Crete (Kommos 1986-1992, Mochlos 1991-1992) and Vlochos, Thessaly (2016-2018).
