Dr. Helen Murphy is a Clinical Professor of Medicine (Diabetes and Antenatal Care) at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the Norwich Medical School. She is a practicing clinician at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust (since 2015) and Cambridge University NHS Foundation Trust (since 2006). Her research focuses on diabetes management during pregnancy, including the CONCEPTT trial, which established continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as standard care for pregnant women with type 1 diabetes. She leads the National Pregnancy in Diabetes (NPID) audit, the UK's largest population-based study in diabetes pregnancy, influencing healthcare policy.
Her work on closed-loop insulin delivery systems, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, aims to improve outcomes for pregnant individuals with type 1 diabetes. Supported by JDRF, Diabetes UK, and NIHR, her research addresses gestational diabetes, type 2 diabetes pregnancy outcomes, and healthcare infrastructure. She serves on editorial boards for Diabetes Care and Diabetologia, and collaborates internationally. Current projects include PROTECT (CGM in type 2 diabetes pregnancy) and DiLIGENT (postpartum diabetes technology).
Key grants and projects span diabetes stigma reduction, SGLT2 inhibitors in aortic stenosis, and pre-pregnancy care programs. Her multidisciplinary team includes engineers and social scientists, advancing clinical and technological innovations.
