Aveni Haynes is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UWA Medical School's Department of Pediatrics. She holds part-time roles as a Principal Research Fellow at The Kids Research Institute (Perth) and a Research Associate with Life for a Child, focusing on global pediatric diabetes care equity. Her primary affiliation is with the Children’s Diabetes Centre, leading epidemiological and early-stage type 1 diabetes research.
Education includes a PhD in Childhood Diabetes Epidemiology (UWA, 2013), an MBBChir from Addenbrooke's Hospital (1995), and a BA (Hons) in Medicine from the University of Cambridge (1993). Additional qualifications include a Diploma in Business Programming (2001).
Research focuses on type 1 diabetes etiology, pregnancy/early-life risk factors, and equitable access to treatments in low-resource settings. Key projects include Australia-wide studies on CGM technology for pre-symptomatic monitoring and the ENDIA pregnancy cohort study. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and education.
Recent grants include a JDRF-funded project (2024–2029) to optimize type 1 diabetes care and a study on early dysglycaemia detection. She collaborates internationally on global diabetes technology disparities and pandemic health impacts.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Children’s Diabetes Centre’s epidemiology theme and participates in the Australasian Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Collaborative (ATIC) and JDRF Global Centre of Excellence.
