Helen Morgan Parmett is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Vermont, holding the Edwin W. Lawrence Endowed Professorship of Forensics. She serves as Director of the Speech and Debate Program and the Lawrence Debate Union, while also serving as affiliate faculty in the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies and Film and Television Studies Programs. Her research focuses on critical media studies, examining relationships between media, identity, and spatial dynamics in urban contexts. Parmett holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Communication Studies (2012), an M.A. from the University of Pittsburgh (2002), and a B.A. from the University of Vermont (2000).

Her research investigates how media production practices—across radio, film, television, interactive media, and sports media—shape urban spatiality and identity formation. Recent work explores televisual nostalgia in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, sportification of urban spaces through stadiums, and post-Katrina mediatized urban renewal in New Orleans. Her publications analyze transnational broadcasting history in the Pacific Northwest and the role of media in constituting regional identities.
Her work has been recognized through the Edwin W. Lawrence Endowed Professorship, reflecting her contributions to forensic studies and media scholarship. Parmett’s research bridges critical media theory with urban sociology, emphasizing material and spatial dimensions of media practices.
