Helen Kim, MPH, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. She is based at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and is a key investigator at the UCSF Center for Cerebrovascular Research. Dr. Kim collaborates extensively with researchers at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Duke University, and the University of New Mexico.
Her research focuses on identifying risk factors that predispose younger individuals to stroke and cardiovascular disease. She leads studies on the genetic epidemiology of hemorrhagic stroke and modifiers of outcome after hemorrhage or treatment in patients with brain vascular malformations. Dr. Kim employs both candidate gene and genome-wide approaches to identify genetic factors associated with disease susceptibility and progression, using SNP and expression arrays, and next-gen sequencing. Her work spans genetic epidemiology, cerebrovascular diseases, brain vascular malformations, and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.
Analysis of Dr. Kim's 15 most recent publications reveals a strong focus on cerebral cavernous malformations, arteriovenous malformations, and the genetic underpinnings of these conditions. Her research increasingly incorporates microbiome analysis, gut-brain axis interactions, and biomarker development for predicting disease severity and treatment outcomes. Recent work includes clinical trials on simvastatin for permeability in cavernous malformations and developing grading systems for cerebellar AVMs.
Dr. Kim has received significant recognition through her extensive publication record and leadership in major collaborative studies. Her work has contributed to consensus guidelines for the diagnosis and clinical management of cavernous malformations.
As a mentor, Dr. Kim has advised numerous researchers including Jeffrey Nelson, Shantel Weinsheimer, and Charles McCulloch who frequently appear as co-authors on her publications. Her research has been supported by multiple grants focused on understanding the genetic basis of cerebrovascular malformations and developing better treatment approaches.
Dr. Kim leads several large case-cohort studies of brain arteriovenous malformations, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral cavernous malformations, and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, working with a multidisciplinary team to advance understanding and treatment of these complex conditions.
