Dr Helen Hou is a Lecturer in the School of Education at Ulster University since 2010. She holds a PhD in Education from the University of Manchester (2012) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2015).

- PgDip in Applied Linguistics (Fudan University, 2003)
- MEd in Educational Technology and TESOL (University of Manchester, 2005)
Her research focuses on online communities of practice, ELT methodology, digital pedagogy, and educational technologies in language classrooms, with emphasis on Chinese learners and qualitative research designs. Recent work explores multilingual adolescents' school belonging, AI-driven translanguaging, and parental roles in pandemic digital education.
Key trends in her publications include leveraging machine translation for EAL equity, systematic reviews of home-school partnerships, and qualitative case studies on special educational needs during lockdowns. Her work aligns with UN SDGs for inclusive education (4) and reducing inequalities (10).
