Her research focuses on defining genetic determinants of plasma lipid levels and cardiovascular risk, with recent emphasis on identifying genetic variations that confer susceptibility to fatty liver disease. She established the Dallas Heart Study, a longitudinal, multiethnic population-based study supported by the Hoffman Family Center in Genetics and Epidemiology and the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS).
The Hobbs-Cohen Laboratory investigates how dysregulation of lipid uptake and trafficking contributes to human diseases, combining human genetics with functional studies to elucidate mechanisms underlying lipid metabolism disorders.
