Helen Baulch is a Professor and Assistant Director Academic (Internal) at the School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS), University of Saskatchewan. She holds the Centennial Enhancement Chair in Aquatic Ecosystem Biogeochemistry and is a Member of the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Her research focuses on water quality, eutrophication, winter limnology, and climate change impacts on aquatic ecosystems. She leads the Saskatchewan Water Chemistry and Ecology Group, collaborating with stakeholders to address water quality challenges in agricultural and wetland systems. Key research areas include nutrient dynamics, greenhouse gas emissions, and the socio-ecological management of freshwater resources.
Academic Credentials: PhD in Environmental and Life Sciences (Trent University), MSc in Biological Sciences (University of Alberta), BSc (Hons) in Biology (University of Waterloo).
Research highlights include studies on Prairie wetland drainage, agricultural nutrient runoff mitigation, and winter water quality dynamics. Her work integrates biogeochemistry, hydrology, and stakeholder engagement to inform sustainable water management. Recent projects involve developing tools for harmful algal bloom forecasting and advancing understanding of under-ice lake processes.
Awards and recognitions include the Royal Society of Canada membership and her leadership in the Global Institute for Water Security. She advises on national initiatives like the NSERC Canadian Lake Pulse Network and collaborates with Environment and Climate Change Canada at the National Hydrology Research Centre.
Her lab, equipped with advanced analytical tools, supports interdisciplinary training and innovation in water science. Key collaborations involve agricultural producers, government agencies, and Indigenous communities to co-develop solutions for water quality challenges.
