Colin Whitfield is an Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan's School of Environment and Sustainability. He directs the MSs Regenerative Sustainability Program and is a member of the Global Institute of Water Security. His research focuses on catchment hydrochemistry, ecosystem biogeochemistry, and climate change impacts, particularly in the Canadian Prairies. He investigates acidification processes, mineral weathering, and greenhouse gas emissions in wetland ecosystems.
Dr. Whitfield holds a PhD in Watershed Ecosystems from Trent University, an MSc in the same field, and a BSc in Environmental Science from Simon Fraser University. His recent work emphasizes wetland drainage effects, hydrological modeling, and the development of data tools for water management (e.g., the Prairie Hydrology Design and Analysis Product).
His research highlights the critical role of wetlands in mitigating climate change and sustaining ecosystem services. He explores policy frameworks for balancing agricultural development with environmental conservation, particularly in prairie communities. Collaborations with institutions like the National Hydrology Research Centre underpin his applied, interdisciplinary approach to environmental challenges.
