Marcelo Ardón is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University, affiliated with the College of Natural Resources. His research focuses on climate change impacts on coastal and tropical ecosystems, particularly biogeochemical processes, greenhouse gas emissions, and ecosystem resilience. He holds a B.A. in Biology & Environmental Science from Gettysburg College, a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Georgia, and completed postdoctoral work in Biogeochemistry at Duke University.
Key research interests include coastal wetland dynamics, saltwater intrusion effects, tropical stream acidification, and the use of remote sensing and machine learning for environmental monitoring. His work integrates long-term ecological data with experimental approaches to address climate-driven challenges in ecosystems and communities.
Notable grants include NSF-funded studies on climate-driven acidification in tropical streams and coastal wetland resilience, totaling over $1.4 million. He emphasizes interdisciplinary training, having mentored numerous students and early-career researchers. Ardón collaborates with organizations like The Nature Conservancy on hydrological restoration and citizen science initiatives, including iNaturalist-based projects in Costa Rica.
