Justin Prouty Wright is a Professor of Biology and Dean of Graduate Education at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He also holds a joint appointment as Professor in Marine Science and Conservation at the Nicholas School of the Environment. His research focuses on biodiversity patterns, ecosystem function, and the impacts of environmental disturbances like saltwater intrusion and climate change on coastal ecosystems. Key areas include plant community dynamics, saltwater intrusion effects, and biogeochemical cycles.
Wright earned his Ph.D. in Biology from Cornell University (2002) and a B.A. from Williams College (1996). He leads the Wright Lab, dedicated to understanding global ecological changes. Recent grants include NSF-funded projects on saltwater intrusion in rural landscapes and microbial community assembly. He has published extensively on topics like fire ecology, coastal wetland resilience, and invasive species impacts. His work bridges field experiments, remote sensing, and global datasets to inform conservation and climate adaptation strategies.
Grants & Service: Wright has secured over $5M in NSF and NASA grants, including a 2021-2025 DISES RCN grant. He serves on NSF review panels and leads Bass Connections projects on conservation technology. His service includes mentoring roles at Duke and editorial work for PLoS ONE.
Labs & Outreach: The Wright Lab collaborates globally, studying ecosystems from tropical forests to coastal wetlands. Public engagement includes media features on 'ghost forests' and coastal resilience, highlighting his work's societal relevance.
