Michael Hupfer

Michael Hupfer is a Professor of Aquatic Biogeochemistry at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and leads the Research Group on Biogeochemical Processes in Sediments and Lake Management at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), Berlin. His roles include serving as Editor-in-Chief of Limnologica and the Handbuch Angewandte Limnologie, and membership in the German Limnological Society.

Education: Dr. rer. nat. (1993, TU Dresden), Diploma in Hydrobiology/Limnology (1988, TU Dresden), and studies in Marine Ecology (1983–1985, University Rostock). Postdoctoral research included positions at Eawag (Switzerland) and UFZ Leipzig-Halle.

Research Focus: Redox-driven matter transport, lake nutrient cycles, lake management strategies, climate impacts on aquatic ecosystems, and sediment dynamics. Key areas include phosphorus cycling, eutrophication feedback mechanisms, and the effects of sulfate reduction on geochemical processes.

Publications: Over 160 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to lake restoration, climate adaptation, and biogeochemical modeling. Recent work addresses vivianite formation, iron amendments in lake sediments, and remote sensing applications for water quality assessment.

Grants & Projects: Leads the DFG Research Training Group Urban Water Interfaces and contributes to initiatives like BaltRap ( Baltic Sea environmental dynamics) and ISEO (Lake Iseo mixing patterns). Co-authored guidelines for lake restoration (Stechlinsee Handreichung) and climate impact studies (Seen im Klimawandel).

Labs/Teams: Heads the Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry department at IGB, coordinating interdisciplinary teams studying aquatic boundaries and ecosystem linkages.
