Prof. Dr. Dr. hc Heinrich Honsell is a renowned legal scholar and emeritus professor of Swiss Private Law at the University of Zurich, as well as an honorary professor of Commercial Law at the University of Salzburg. He holds German and Austrian citizenship and has held academic positions at the Universities of Bielefeld, Salzburg, and Zurich, specializing in private law, Roman law, and legal methodology.
His academic career includes habilitation in Munich, professorships in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and roles in professional organizations such as the German Association of Civil Law Teachers. He is a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and has been recognized with an honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna (2015).
Honsell’s expertise spans private law, corporate law, insurance law, international arbitration, and Roman legal history. His extensive publications include monographs, textbooks, and commentaries on Swiss and German civil law, notably the Basel Commentary and contributions to Staudinger’s Commentary on the German Civil Code.
Currently a consultant at Rutschmann Schwaibold Partner, he advises on commercial, corporate, and international law matters. His work emphasizes legal methodology, comparative law, and the intersection of law with ethics and history.
Honsell’s scholarly contributions include over 100 articles and books, addressing topics like liability law, medical law, and legal reform. His influence extends to legal education through casebooks and doctrinal analyses, ensuring the practical application of theoretical principles.
