Heidi Ruby-Kushious is a distinguished flutist and educator affiliated with multiple institutions, including the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), Case Western Reserve University (via the Joint Music Program), and others. She holds teaching roles at CIM’s Preparatory Division, the University of Akron School of Music, Kenyon College, and Yale University. Her academic background includes a BM from The Curtis Institute of Music, an MM from Yale School of Music, and postgraduate studies at Mozarteum University Salzburg.
Her research interests revolve around flute performance techniques, orchestral ensemble dynamics, and pedagogy, informed by her extensive experience with legendary mentors like Julius Baker and Alain Marion. She has received prestigious awards such as the Munich International Competition Laureate Prize and the Tanglewood Fellowship.
Professionally, Ruby-Kushious is a core member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (Second Flute/Solo Piccolo), an extra performer with The Cleveland Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and has held principal roles in ensembles like City Music Cleveland. She has toured internationally and performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Orchestra and at venues like Carnegie Hall.
Her recordings include Dominick Farinacci’s Short Stories and live performances with major orchestras. Critics praise her as a “virtuosic, agile, expressive player” with technical mastery, noted for phrasing described as “perfect match[es]” and performances evoking “tranquil, mystical, and poetic” qualities.
