Hedi-Liis Toome is an Associate Professor of Theatre Research at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, leading the Institute of Cultural Research since 2025. She holds a Doctorate in Theatre Studies (2015) from the University of Tartu and has completed advanced studies in Paris and the University of Groningen. Her research focuses on theatre sociology, audience reception, and comparative European theatre systems through the STEP project. She has served as communications head at Endla Theatre and CEO of the Estonian Theatre Festival Foundation, while actively contributing to cultural policy debates via her radio show Teatrivaht on Vikerraadio.
Key administrative roles include program director for BA/MA theatre programs, board memberships at institutions like Vanemuine Theatre and Vaba Lava, and jury roles for theatre awards. Her research emphasizes quantitative/qualitative methods, urban theatre dynamics, and cultural policy impact. Notable publications include works on European theatre audiences and the STEP framework. Awards include the University of Tartu’s recognition (2021).
Current projects include the EU-funded ACT UP! initiative linking theatre to urban politics. She collaborates internationally through IFTR and the STEP research group, advocating for audience-centric theatre practices.
