Uku Tooming is an Associate Professor of Theoretical Philosophy and Chair of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Tartu's Department of Philosophy. He leads the five-year project The Role of Imagination in Cognition: Modern and Ancient Views, funded by the Estonian Research Council, which integrates contemporary and ancient Greek perspectives on imagination. His research focuses on imagination's role in shaping attitudes, epistemic generativity of memory and imagination, and philosophical aesthetics. He serves as program director of the Bachelor of Philosophy program and regularly delivers lectures, such as his February 2025 talk on Imagination as a Shaper of Attitudes.
Research interests include theoretical philosophy, philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and ethics. His interdisciplinary work bridges classical and modern thought, addressing topics like affective forecasting, self-knowledge, and the aesthetics of culinary experience. He has published widely on imagination's epistemic and ethical dimensions, and his current ERC-funded project explores imagination's cognitive roles through comparative historical analysis.
No scientific awards are explicitly mentioned. Grants include the Estonian Research Council funding. Advising and mentoring are central to his role as program director, though specific advisee names are not provided in the text.
