Heather Prince is an Associate Tutor (Outdoor Education) at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport. She holds honorary titles including Professor Emerita at the University of Cumbria and Visiting Professor at Plymouth Marjon University. Her academic career spans over three decades, with expertise in outdoor and environmental education, experiential learning, and curriculum design. She established the UK's first Outdoor Studies undergraduate degree and contributed to postgraduate programs like the Erasmus-Mundus MA.
Education: BSc (Hons) Geography (Durham), PhD Palaeoecology (Aberystwyth), PGCE (Bangor), and certifications in nature conservation and outdoor activities (e.g., Mountain Leader, Canoe Instructor).
Research focuses on outdoor learning's role in formal education, sustainability, inclusion, and technology integration. Notable projects include the Morecambe Bay Curriculum and frameworks for outdoor learning in schools. Awards include AdvanceHE Principal Fellow and Institute for Outdoor Learning Research Award.
Teaching includes postgraduate courses in Outdoor Education and supervision of 7 PhD completions. She also serves as an external examiner for Ireland’s Atlantic Technological University and collaborates with organizations like Natural England and the National Trust.
Her work bridges research and practice, emphasizing place-based and nature-based learning. Current projects address school access to outdoor spaces and curriculum development for environmental education.
