Professor Peter Higgins holds a Personal Chair in Outdoor Environmental & Sustainability Education at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport. He is affiliated with the Institute for Education, Teaching & Leadership (IETL), the United Nations Regional Centre for ESD (Scotland), and the Outdoor and Environmental Education Unit. His roles include Chair of NatureScot’s Scientific Advisory Committee and Board Member of the UK’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee.

Research focuses on integrating outdoor learning, sustainability education, and policy development. He pioneered the University of Edinburgh’s Carbon Sequestration Programme and led UNESCO’s Regional Centre for Expertise in Scotland. His work has influenced Scottish Government policies and international frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Awards include the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching and multiple fellowships. He supervises over 20 PhD students and has attracted £5M+ in research grants. His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including innovative MOOCs like 'Learning for Sustainability' with 13,000+ global participants.
He advises charities and government bodies, including the Venture Trust and Field Studies Council. His honorary roles include Senior Research Fellowships and collaborations with institutions like Cornell University.
