Heather Peyton serves as Associate Professor of Oboe and Music Theory at the University of Northern Iowa's School of Music within the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. Her office is located in Russell Hall (Room 59), and she maintains active performance and scholarly engagement across multiple domains.
Her research spans specialized areas including Oboe Pedagogy, Performance Psychology, Wellness and Mindfulness practices for musicians, Music Entrepreneurship, Student Success methodologies, and Educational Technology integration. Her commitment to equity in music education led to co-authoring the Open Educational Resource Comprehensive Musicianship: A Practical Resource for core theory curriculum, emphasizing the theory-performance connection.
Dr. Peyton received the 2024 Ross A. Nielsen Professional Service Award for her extensive university and community service. She currently presides over UNI's Pi Kappa Lambda chapter and previously led the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors. Her service includes statewide oboe reed clinics, lessons, and instrument repair initiatives across Iowa.
