Heather J. Male

Dr. Heather J. Male is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, specializing in Hematologic Malignancies and Cellular Therapeutics within the Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine. She is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist licensed to practice in both Kansas and Missouri.

Dr. Male earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She further enhanced her expertise with an MBA in Healthcare Administration from the University of Saint Mary. Her educational background includes a BS in Biology & Chemistry from Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Her primary research interests focus on acute leukemias and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), with numerous publications addressing these areas. Dr. Male serves as principal investigator for multiple acute leukemia clinical trials and has contributed significantly to the understanding of HLH in various clinical contexts including pregnancy, fungal infections, and bacterial causes. Her recent work has examined treatment approaches for AML, CNS involvement in leukemia, and CPX-351 pharmacokinetics.

Dr. Male is actively involved in professional organizations, currently serving as Vice Chair of the ASH Committee on Government Affairs (2025-Present) and as a member of the ASH Committee on Quality. She has been a member of the American Society of Hematology since 2011 and the American Society of Clinical Oncology since 2011.

Her scholarly contributions span from 2010 to 2024, with recent publications focusing on AML treatment protocols, CNS involvement in leukemia, gender disparities in research funding, and pharmacokinetics of novel leukemia treatments.
