Heather Falconer is an Assistant Professor of Professional and Technical Writing at the University of Maine’s Department of English. Her work focuses on challenging boundaries in communication across professions, emphasizing equity, inclusion, and justice in academic and technical writing. She teaches courses that explore how language, design, and ethics shape professional and technical spaces.
Her research includes a book-in-progress examining BIPOC and female STEM students’ experiences in undergraduate research programs, interrogating how language and curriculum perpetuate opportunity gaps. She is also leading a study on neurodivergent students’ writing challenges in higher education, collaborating with undergraduates as co-researchers to address accessibility barriers.
As an Editor for the Perspectives on Writing series and Vice-Chair of the North East Writing Across the Curriculum Consortium, Falconer advocates for scholarly collaboration and supports educators in navigating writing research dissemination. She actively engages with professionals across career stages to advance writing pedagogy and institutional equity.
Her current projects emphasize dismantling systemic barriers in STEM education and redefining inclusive academic practices through interdisciplinary research and advocacy.
