Dr. Heather Armstrong is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, and holds a faculty position at the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on the intersection of diet, microbiome, and immune dysfunction in autoimmune diseases, cancer, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). She leads multi-disciplinary teams investigating translational models of dysbiosis-related pathologies.
Education: PhD-MED in Medicine (University of Adelaide, 2016), MSc in Cell Biology (University of Alberta, 2012), BSc in Biological Sciences (University of Alberta, 2010).
Research emphasizes dietary fibers' dual roles in health and disease, microbial metabolite signaling, and interferon pathways in gut immunity. Her work bridges basic science and clinical applications, particularly in personalized medicine approaches for IBD.
Awards include the 2024 CIHR Outstanding Reviewer Award, Terry G. Falconer Emerging Researcher Award, and global recognition as a member of the Global Young Academy. She collaborates with institutions like the Manitoba Centre for Proteomics and the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute.
