Dr Hazel Sales is an Associate Lecturer (part-time) at the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, University of Plymouth. She specializes in English Language and Linguistics, focusing on communication challenges in engineering and academic contexts. Her work includes designing short courses, workshops, and providing editorial support for engineers and academics. She holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (2002) on engineering writing practices and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research Interests: Hazel’s research revolves around communication in commercial and academic workplaces, particularly in engineering. She authored the book *Professional Communication in Engineering* (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006), analyzing engineering documentation and proposal writing. Her long-term ethnographic study at BAE Systems/UTC Aerospace Systems explored how engineers communicate, with a focus on technical writing.
Key Contributions: She improved research submissions for the UK Research Excellence Framework (2014), aiding engineering academics in enhancing their written outputs. Her consultancy work spans BAE Systems, Babcock International, and the Royal Devonport Dockyard, focusing on bid writing and technical communication training.
