Hayley Ma

Hayley Ma is a Senior Lecturer in the Accounting Discipline Group at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Business School. She is affiliated with the Methodological and Empirical Advances in Financial Analysis Research Group at the University of Sydney, the Financial Research Network in Australia, and the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand. Prior to joining UTS in 2016, she was a Sessional Lecturer at the University of Sydney Business School.

Hayley holds a PhD in Accounting from the University of Sydney, focusing on the management and economic impact of intangible assets. She has held visiting scholar positions at prestigious institutions, including Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan School of Management, ESSEC Business School (Singapore), Renmin University (China), and the Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University.

Her research expertise spans corporate investment in innovation, firm performance and value, financial reporting and disclosure practices, and the information environment of capital markets. Her work emphasizes transdisciplinary approaches to address real-world business challenges and provide actionable insights for stakeholders. Key areas of interest include understanding how innovation activities are disclosed by firms and their implications for investor decisions and business valuations.

Hayley has been recognized with the UTS Business School Early Career Research Achievement Award (2021) for her contributions to corporate innovation research and enhancing the university’s research excellence through international collaborations. She has secured competitive grants, including the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand Developing Researcher Grant and UTS Business Research Grants.

• Teaching: Financial statement and business analysis at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Supervision: Advised five Accounting Honours students since 2017 and mentored Higher Degree Research students.
• Industry Engagement: Collaborations with IP Australia, Australian Accounting Standards Board Research Forum, and Oceania Stata Users Group.

Hayley is actively involved in industry partnerships and government agencies, contributing to stakeholder events and advancing applied research initiatives.
