Hayagreeva Rao is the Atholl McBean Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resources at Stanford Graduate School of Business and Professor of Sociology (by courtesy) at the School of Humanities and Sciences. He is also a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Science and the Academy of Management.

His research focuses on collective action, organizational change, scaling innovation, and institutional dynamics. He explores how social movements drive organizational transformation, the role of identity in strategic success, and the impact of biological threats on cultural behavior. His recent work examines organizational friction and methods to optimize decision-making by reducing inefficiencies.
Recent publications include studies on conspiracy theories, social movement mobilization, and pandemic-driven consumer behavior. His teaching emphasizes organizational scaling, culture design, and innovation leadership, with courses like People Operations: From Startup to Scaleup. Awards include the W. Richard Scott Distinguished Award for Scholarship and multiple BP Faculty Fellowships in Global Management.
