Dr. Hasina Samji is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University and a Senior Scientist in Population Mental Health and Wellbeing at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). Her work focuses on intersectoral collaborations to address early drivers of risk and resilience in youth mental health, with a commitment to social justice and implementation science.
- Education: PhD and MSc in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; BA in Human Biology from Brown University.
Dr. Samji leads the Capturing Health and Resilience Trajectories (CHART) Lab (chartlab.ca), where she investigates social and structural determinants of youth mental health. She is Principal Investigator of the Youth Development Instrument (YDI), a provincial study measuring predictors of adolescent wellbeing, and co-lead of the Personal Impacts of COVID-19 Survey (PICS). Her research intersects public health, education systems, and marginalized populations.
- Scientific Awards: New Investigator Award (2011), MSFHR Postdoctoral Fellowship (2015), SFU Teaching Excellence Award (2022), CIHR Pandemic Preparedness Prize (2022), Kavli Fellow (2023).
She is an Affiliate Investigator at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Affiliate Scholar at the Human Early Learning Partnership (UBC), and advocates for public mental health systems that prioritize prevention and population-level wellbeing.
