Martin Guhn

Dr. Martin Guhn is an Associate Professor at the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) within the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He holds a PhD in Human Development from UBC, alongside degrees in Psychology and Music. His research focuses on the interplay between early childhood experiences and broader social, cultural, and socioeconomic contexts in shaping developmental outcomes, health, and educational achievement.

His work leverages population-based data through tools like the Toddler Development Instrument (TDI), Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CHEQ), Early Development Instrument (EDI), Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI), and the newly developed Youth Development Instrument (YDI), created in collaboration with Dr. Hasina Samji (SFU; BCCDC). Key areas include bio-ecological theories of human development, validation of population-level assessments, longitudinal measurement of change, and knowledge-to-action research in school and community settings. His recent publications highlight cross-disciplinary exploration of mental health disparities, environmental exposures, and policy implications for immigrant, refugee, and non-immigrant youth in Canada.
