Harry Rutter is a Professor in Global Public Health at the University of Bath, based in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences and affiliated with the Centre for 21st Century Public Health. His roles include co-chairing the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) Environment and Modelling Group, leading the Lancet Commission on post-COVID-19 population health, and chairing the EU Joint Action on Cancer and Non-Communicable Diseases. Rutter holds adjunct professorships at Agder University and University College Cork.
Education: He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cambridge (1991), a Master of Science in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (2001), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Oxford (2008).
Research focuses on complex systems, obesity, physical activity, climate change and health, and structural drivers of health inequalities. He has advised numerous national and international bodies, including the WHO, NHS, and MRC. His work integrates systems thinking to address public health challenges like commercial determinants of health, policy design, and urbanization impacts on health.
Key contributions include projects like the SPECTRUM initiative analyzing food industry influence, the Health Hub program on commercial determinants of health equity, and leadership in global obesity prevention efforts through the CO-CREATE project. Rutter has authored over 269 research outputs, including influential studies on the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy and childhood obesity prevention strategies.
He serves on multiple advisory boards, including the Faculty of Public Health’s Academic and Research Committee, the Welsh Government’s Healthy Weight initiative, and the World Obesity Federation Policy Committee. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Good Health and Well-being, Climate Action, and Sustainable Cities.
