Margaret Steele is a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Public Health at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from Marquette University (2015), an MSc in Obesity from the University of Galway (2021), and postgraduate teaching qualifications from UCC (2023). Her research focuses on interdisciplinary issues in obesity, commercial determinants of health, ethics of population-level food policies, and philosophy of medicine/epidemiology. Current projects include the FOODPATH initiative addressing diet-related health inequalities and systematic reviews on commercial determinants and local food policies.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating the EH1010 Introduction to Public Health module and delivering specialized courses on commercial determinants, political determinants of health, and obesity across UCC's MPH and MA in Health & Society programs. She also supervises postgraduate research projects in food policy and commercial determinants.
Professional roles include membership in the Cork Medical Humanities Research Alliance Steering Group and the Society for Women in Philosophy Ireland. She serves as a peer reviewer for journals such as Obesity Reviews and International Journal of Obesity. Recent conference presentations include work on corporate sustainability commitments and obesity at the European Congress on Obesity and European Public Health Conference.
Her research bridges philosophy and public health, examining ethical frameworks around 'personal responsibility' narratives in obesity discourse and exploring how philosophical perspectives can inform equitable food policy design.
