Margaret McCarthy is a lecturer in Irish dance and music at the Department of Music, University College Cork (UCC). She holds an Honours Postgraduate degree, a BMus, a Master's in Ethnomusicology, and a Higher Diploma in Education from UCC. Her career spans international performance as a principal lead in the world-renowned 'Rhythm of The Dance' troupe and solo artist, with over 42 countries toured and notable performances at the White House (2009) and alongside Dolly Parton (2006).
Her research interests focus on ethnomusicology, traditional Irish arts, and cultural performance practices. She currently teaches Irish dance at UCC, drawing from her training under Peggy McTaggart, a renowned dance instructor. McCarthy's work bridges academic music education with global performance, emphasizing the preservation and innovation of Irish cultural heritage.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Cork Opera House through the School of Film, Music and Theatre, contributing to initiatives like the Theatre Artist in Residence program. Her collaborations include the 'Rhythm of The Dance' troupe and participation in UCC's CARPE research cluster for arts and performance studies.
