Dr. Kevin McNally is a musician and Lecturer at the Department of Music, University College Cork (UCC), affiliated with the School of Film, Music and Theatre. His research focuses on ethnomusicology, ecomusicology, and community music, with a particular interest in the intersection of music, place, and environment. He teaches gamelan and Irish music at UCC and collaborates with the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in the University of Limerick. McNally is also assistant director of the Irish Gamelan Orchestra and co-director of the Clonakilty International Guitar Festival.
His current research explores sound as a form of co-presence between human and non-human bodies in rural landscapes, using the Javanese gamelan orchestra in Skibbereen, Co. Cork, as a case study. Recent work includes performances with the Irish Gamelan Orchestra, original compositions, and a 2020 conference paper on community gamelan ensembles.
McNally’s career combines academic teaching, performance, and community engagement, reflecting his dedication to bridging artistic practice with scholarly inquiry.
