Harry Clifton (b. 1952) is an internationally acclaimed Irish poet and former Ireland Professor of Poetry (2010–2013). Educated at Blackrock College and University College Dublin (UCD), he has lectured globally, including at Nigerian teacher training colleges, German and French universities, and Trinity College Dublin. His work explores themes of haunting, cultural memory, and identity, influenced by his extensive travels across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Clifton has held residencies at Frost Place (New Hampshire) and the University of Iowa, and received major awards like the Irish Times Poetry Now Award (2008) and the Patrick Kavanagh Award (1981). His publications span poetry collections, prose, and translations, reflecting a lifelong engagement with language as a transcendent force.
Research interests include postcolonial identity, historical trauma, and the intersection of personal and collective memory. His poetry often interrogates displacement, cultural hybridity, and the porous boundaries between past and present. Notable works like Secular Eden (2007) and Herod’s Dispensations (2019) exemplify his exploration of existential and mythological themes.
