Martin Dyar is a poet and academic based at Trinity College Dublin, where he teaches Medical Humanities in the School of Medicine. Originally from County Mayo, Ireland, he has authored acclaimed poetry collections such as Maiden Names (2013) and The Meek (2025), both shortlisted for major literary awards. His work bridges poetry with themes of health, identity, and cultural heritage, exemplified by Vital Signs: Poems of Illness and Healing (2022), which toured care homes and mental health facilities nationwide. Dyar has held writing fellowships at the University of Iowa, the Washington Ireland Program, and the University of Limerick, and received the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award (2009) and Strokestown International Poetry Award (2001). In 2023, he became Curator of the Listowel Writers Week Festival, further cementing his role in Ireland’s literary landscape.
- Education/Training: Fellowships at University of Iowa, Washington Ireland Program, and University of Limerick.
- Key Projects: Co-created Buaine na Gaoithe (harp/flute/soprano song cycle), led the Vital Signs poetry/music outreach tour, and adapted plays like Tom Loves a Lord (on poet Thomas Moore).
His research interests emphasize the intersection of poetry with medicine, environmental awareness, and community healing. Dyar’s poetic style blends ritualistic structure with visceral imagery, as seen in poems like The Shannon Reader, which explore patience and creativity. His awards reflect recognition for both literary innovation and contributions to public cultural engagement.
