Dr. Harold Lovell is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Geography and Geosciences at the University of Portsmouth, Faculty of Science and Health. He specializes in glaciology, remote sensing, and environmental processes. His research focuses on glacier dynamics, climate change impacts, and geomorphological mapping in regions like Svalbard, Greenland, and the Andes. Lovell joined Portsmouth in 2014 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2015.
Education: PhD in Glaciology (Queen Mary, University of London and UNIS, 2010-2014); MSc (Research) in Geography (Durham University, 2009-2010); BSc in Geography (University of Plymouth, 2005-2008).
- Supervisors: Sven Lukas, Doug Benn, Bryn Hubbard (PhD)
- Supervisors: Chris Stokes, Mike Bentley (MSc)
- Dissertation Supervisor: David Croot (BSc)
Research interests include surging glaciers, glacial hazards, GIS applications, and remote sensing techniques. He has published extensively on topics such as glacier dynamics in Svalbard, wildfire impacts in Greenland, and climate-driven glacial changes.
Teaching responsibilities include leading the MSc Geographical Information Systems program and instructing courses on GIS, remote sensing, environmental change, and glacier studies.
Lovell collaborates with institutions like the Institute of the Earth and Environment and the Environmental Processes and Impacts Research Group. His work integrates field data with satellite imagery to study glacial and environmental systems globally.
