Professor Doug I Benn is affiliated with the School of Geography and Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews, where he holds the academic rank of Professor. His primary role involves advancing glaciological research and contributing to environmental change studies through innovative modeling and field investigations.
His research focuses on understanding ice dynamics in polar and mountain regions. Key areas include iceberg calving processes with NERC-funded projects like CALISMO and DOMINOS, which aim to reduce uncertainties in sea level rise predictions. Benn leads studies on Thwaites Glacier through the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, investigating potential collapse mechanisms and their global implications. He has developed the first general theory of glacier surges, explaining dynamic behavior through enthalpy budget frameworks and validating it with global datasets. Additionally, he pioneers glacio-speleology to study internal glacial drainage systems in Svalbard and the Himalayas, contributing insights into meltwater retention and outburst flood risks. His work also extends to Snowball Earth theory, linking orbital cycles to Neoproterozoic ice-sheet dynamics.
Benn’s research is disseminated through the GeoBus outreach project and major scientific platforms like IPCC AR6. He currently supervises PhD student William Spicer. His collaborative efforts involve institutions such as the University of Birmingham and international teams working on High Mountain Asia glaciers and West Antarctic ice stability. Recent grants and collaborations are centered on advancing 3D calving models, ice cliff instability mechanisms, and the integration of field data with computational simulations.
