Harel Weinstein is a Professor of Physiology and Biophysics and holds the Maxwell M. Upson Professorship at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he has served since 2002. He previously chaired the department from 2002 to 2021. His research focuses on molecular and computational biophysics, studying cellular mechanisms, membrane dynamics, and macromolecular assemblies. He earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and D.Sc. from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 1966, 1968, and 1971, respectively.
His research interests include bioactive small molecules, computational chemistry, and protein modeling, with applications in cancer, neuroscience, and infectious diseases. The Weinstein Lab employs theoretical models, simulations, and experimental collaborations to investigate cellular signaling, membrane interactions, and drug design. Notable contributions include studies on sterol transporters, viral fusion mechanisms, and allosteric control pathways.
Prof. Weinstein has been recognized with the Maxwell M. Upson Professorship. His recent publications (2023–2025) explore SARS-CoV-1 fusion mechanisms, ensemble molecular dynamics optimizations, and computational tools for biomolecular analysis. He is no longer accepting new graduate students.
