Professor Fredric Cohen (PhD, State University of New York at Stony Brook) is a faculty member at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Rush Medical College, Rush University. His research focuses on two major areas: viral molecular mechanisms of membrane fusion and cholesterol regulation in cellular pathologies.
His work on viral fusion investigates how envelope viruses like HIV, influenza, and Ebola deposit genetic material through membrane fusion pores. Key findings include identifying common mechanisms across viral families and cellular regulators such as membrane voltage and SERINC proteins. For cholesterol regulation, he developed novel methods to measure cholesterol chemical potential, revealing its critical role in inflammation and cancer metastasis.
Recent publications analyze viral fusion kinetics (PLoS Pathog, 2021), antiviral compound mechanisms (Sci Rep, 2020), and cholesterol's biophysical control over cellular pathologies (Biophys J, 2018). His lab maintains a strong emphasis on biophysical modeling and membrane dynamics.
Key collaborators include Ruben Markosyan (HIV fusion), Artem Ayuyan (cholesterol biophysics), and Gang B. Melikyan (viral entry). Methodologies span fluorescence microscopy, computational modeling, and lipid bilayer analysis.
