Harald Aspen is a Professor and Head of the Department of Geography and Social Anthropology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), within the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences. His research focuses on African culture, religion, migration, poverty, and rural development, with a particular emphasis on Ethiopia. Key themes include land rights, social inequality, syncretism, and the intersection of tradition with modernization. He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from NTNU (1994) and has authored/co-authored numerous publications on Ethiopian social dynamics, including studies on rural livelihoods, land expropriation, and cultural identity.
His work bridges academic research and policy engagement, addressing issues such as food security, urbanization, and the impacts of industrialization on rural communities. Notable contributions include analyses of the Amhara people’s cultural practices and the socio-economic transformations in North Wälo. He has organized major international conferences, such as the 16th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (2007), and co-edited volumes on Ethiopian Studies and anthropological theory.
Publications span topics like informal credit systems in rural Ethiopia, early marriage campaigns, and the cultural dimensions of governance. His interdisciplinary approach integrates ethnographic methods with policy analysis, offering insights into global development challenges through local case studies.
