Hans Petter Graver is a Professor at the Department of Private Law, University of Oslo. He has held roles as Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008-2015), academic director of ARENA Centre for European Studies, and president of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2019-2021). His expertise spans administrative law, legal sociology, legal history, and rhetoric. Graver has authored numerous books and articles, with works translated into multiple languages. He holds honorary doctorates from universities in Helsinki, Heidelberg, Uppsala, and Bergen, and is a member of Academia Europaea.
Education: Cand. jur (1980), Dr. juris (1986), both from the University of Oslo.
Research interests focus on judicial independence, rule of law dynamics, legal history (especially Nazi occupation), and legal argumentation. His recent work addresses pandemic governance, climate litigation, and judicial resistance under authoritarian pressures.
Publications highlight themes like judicial ethics in crisis, rule of law backsliding, and Norway's legal responses to Nazi occupation. Awards include honorary memberships from the Finnish Law Society and prestigious international fellowships.
He leads research groups on judicial institutions and legal sociology, contributing to projects like 'Judges under Stress' and 'Breaking Point of Judicial Institutions'.
